History

THOMAS NIEMAN INC grew from a series of freelance assignments in marketing and product development after Tom had spent years managing similar assignments for a major publisher.

IN 1996 projects for Great Source Education Group and for McDougal Littell soon expanded into larger offices and a permanent staff. For Great Source, the assignment to develop a few product ideas developed into the Daybook program, which now spans grades 2-12. For McDougal Littell, a consulting project to explore strategic initiatives developed into the creation of a supplemental publishing imprint, Nextext.

IN 1998 Once large-scale projects began, Nieman Inc. incorporated in September of 1998. At first, the company consisted of two people and an address book of freelancers. Soon we needed to move to larger offices, in the historic Lodge Building in Wilmette, Illinois, to accommodate more editors. A few months later, we broke through the wall and added even more staff, as Nieman Inc. kept growing to keep pace with the product lines it was developing.

IN 2001, Nieman Inc. expanded still again as we began working with new clients. All the while, we continued to publish more and more for the Nextext imprint and Great Source.

IN 2005, Nieman Inc. expanded still again as we began working with new clients, which included National Geographic School Publishing. All the while, we continued to publish more and more for the Nextext imprint and Great Source. During the decade, the firm's client list continued to grow as we developed products for a large number of basal and supplemental publishers, including Holt McDougal, Glencoe, Macmillan, EMC Publishing, Sadlier-Oxford, Zaner-Bloser, Pearson, and others.

In 2009, now into its second decade of operation, Nieman Inc. also began developing materials for an innovative educational technology—the interactive whiteboard (IWB). Working with Promethean Planet, one of the foremost developers of IWB technology, Nieman Inc. created whiteboard lessons for, among others, Dorling Kindersley and National Geographic Classroom Magazines.
